Germany and Berlin as tourist destinations, were the topics of the lecture given by the guests from the German Embassy, to the students of UTMS

The University of Tourism and Management in Skopje, in accordance with the established practice of guest lecturers’ participation, on 20.02.2013, had the honor to host the Deputy Ambassador of Germany in the Republic of Macedonia, Ms Karin Fostner and her assistant, Christine Schroeder. The lecture, which was attended by the students and the professors from UTMS, was dedicated to presenting Germany as a tourist destination, with a particular emphasis on Berlin, a city that has been developing the city tourism for years. The Deputy Ambassador Ms. Foistner started her presentation by showing a film about the Republic of Germany as a travel destination, upon which completion, specifically talked about the tourism potentials of this country, with a particular emphasis on the cultural and historical landmarks of several cities in Germany, such as Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Hamburg. During her speech, Ms. Foistner provided some statistics about the foreign tourists who visit the Republic of Germany, noting that last year, 40 million tourists were registered. For the attendees, especially the students from the Faculty of Tourism, particularly interesting was the fact that in Germany, more than 50 thousand business meetings or congresses, seminars, fairs, etc., are held annually which according to the polls, each visitor of this kind, on his daily visit spends approximately 200 euro, which represents a significant boost to the overall economy of the country.

As a current trend, the guest from the German Embassy pointed out the importance of spa tourism in Germany, which, according to her, is on the rise lately, due to the wellness centers, then sports tourism, the construction of a large number of golf courses, the mass visit of football matches, and of course other events including the Beer Fest in Munich, Oktober Fest "which is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world.

Ms. Schroeder, the assistant, put particular emphasis on tourism opportunities of the city of Berlin, explaining, in particular, its history, the sights, as well as hotel accommodations, noting that the city has more than 110,000 beds in the hotel and private accommodation apartments, which rounds the number of 10 million foreign tourists annually. A particularly interesting segment for the students of UTMS, referred to the so-called phenomenon of “use-replace flats” that the young people from central Europe are using it massively, which implies the opportunity to visit as many cities, through a temporary exchange apartments.

The lectures by Ms. Schroeder and Ms Foistner were followed with particular attention from the students, who after its completion, were asking questions about the tourism potentials of the city of Munich and other cities in Germany. Eventually, in the framework of their visit toUTMS, the guests from the German Embassy met with the Chancellor, Prof. Ace Milenkovski, PhD, and a mutual satisfaction with this type of collaboration was expressed. Germany, through its Embassy in Macedonia has the ability to present its tourist potentials to the young population in this country, whereas the students from UTMS had the opportunity to expand their knowledge platform for specific destinations, originally from representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in Macedonia. The Chancellor Milenkovski and Ms. Foistner expressed their readiness for cooperation between UTMS and the German Embassy to further and other forms of mutual interest.
